Questions about Bee and Wasp Nesting Behaviors

 Nesting & Behavior
  1. Where do they usually build their nests? These insects prefer:
    • Eaves, soffits, rooflines, light fixtures
    • Trees, shrubs, and bushes
    • Wall voids or attic spaces (especially yellow jackets)
    • Underground cavities (yellow jackets)
  2. How can I tell where the nest is?
Look for frequent flight paths—wasps will travel back and forth in a straight line. You may also hear buzzing or see the nest structure on walls, in trees, or entering through gaps in the home’s exterior.
  3. Are they more active at certain times of the day?
Yes, they’re most active during the warmest daylight hours—typically mid-morning to late afternoon. Activity slows down in the early morning or evening.
  4. Do they nest underground or in the walls of a home?
Yellow jackets often nest underground or inside wall voids. Paper wasps and hornets generally nest above ground, but access to structural gaps may lead them inside walls.
  5. Will they go away on their own when the weather gets colder?
Yes. Most colonies die off with the first hard frost. However, they become more aggressive in late fall, so it’s best not to wait for cold weather if there's a risk near your home. Also if the nest is in the wall void and depending on its location in the structure can last longer past the First hard frost as the warmth from interior heat is allowing them to survive
